Polio (poliomyelitis) is an infectious disease caused by poliovirus. There is a polio vaccine, but the disease still affects many people throughout the world. Most of those affected (around 70%) have no symptoms, with the rest generally having minor symptoms. However, in a small percentage of cases (about 0.5%), the virus can move from the gut to the central nervous system (CNS) and cause lasting weakness, usually in the legs.
In some cases, a person who has contracted polio earlier in life may display symptoms much later on, even after treatment. This is known as “post-polio syndrome” (PPS). There are few clinical studies on cannabis as a treatment for PPS, but one case study has noted its efficacy in treating treatment-resistant nausea and chronic pain associated with PPS.
