Inflammatory neuropathy, or chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy (CIDP), is a rare neurological disorder where nerve roots and peripheral nerves are inflamed, and the myelin sheath (the fatty protective covering) surrounding nerves is destroyed. Symptoms include tingling and numbness, weakness in the arms and legs, loss of deep tendon reflexes (areflexia), extreme fatigue and abnormal sensations. It is often associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Cannabinoids have plenty of potential in the treatment of various kinds of neuropathy, and may suppress inflammation and neuropathic pain by targeting α3 glycine receptors. Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies show promising results for cannabinoids’ ability to treat neuropathy. Beta-caryophyllene – a terpene-cannabinoid often found in cannabis – also shows promise as a pain-relieving agent in neuropathy due to its ability to activate CB2 receptors.
